There I am at a fundraiser for some schoolmate's final year design project. I was entered in a draw, which I must admit was a little fixed, for motorcycle lessons. This was June of 1999, and you guessed it, I won them. Shortly after taking the lessons and passing the test I went shopping for a bike. I ended up buying a 1985 Yamaha RZ500, which is a V-4, 4 carbs, 4 pipes, 2-stroke! What a rocket of a first bike.
I rode on the street for a couple of years, attained my Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering and started getting interested in the physics and dynamics of bikes. An RZ5 requires quite a bit of work and I learned all about bike maintenance. After pre-mixing gas and kick starting a fairly heavy bike I decided to get something requiring a little less maintenance. I picked up a new Ninja 500R and took it out to the track a few times. After getting a taste for the track I found I wanted something a little quicker and got my 2001 SV650S. I was in love.
Took that one out to the track and my instructor Grant said that I was real smooth and should consider racing. That was that, and I started racing in 2003. My sponsors for my first year were my own contracting company I had started called O'Leary Mech Design - O'Leary being the Newfie/Irish side of me - as well as Revoluzione Cycles.
I am also looking into pursuing an education in Motorcycle Dynamics. I guess since I'm already a Mechanical Engineer I might as well mix that up with something fun!
Some highlights of 2003: Spectacular slide along front straight at Race City on my back at Nationals; 3rd overall SV Cup at Stratotech in Edmonton; and did some XR100 racing, including an endurance race on Thanksgiving.
Highlights of 2004: Ice racing in Feb; track tour in USA April, 1 day Buttonwillow & 2 day Thunderhill (Canyon Strafers), 2 day Pahrump (SoCal Track Days) , and finally a Jason Pridmore STAR School @ Streets of Willow; Won racer of the month July 4th in Calgary; 3rd Overall in Formula II in Calgary.
Some of my other hobbies include ladies competitive soccer, indoor and outdoor; snowboarding, organizing a ski trip with 70-90 of my friends every year; member of the Wild West Vixen's who comprise of some of my closest friends; car and bike mechanics; learning about being a landlord as of late; and I LOVE karaoke!!
